When I first started riding bicycles it was part of the sport to know how to maintain and repair your bike. Fixing flats, truing wheels, adjusting brakes and derailleurs were all part of being a cyclist. Evergreen, where I went to college, had a bike shop in the basement of the library building. An hour before a group ride I would be in there adjusting this and fixing that making sure everything on my bike was perfect. You could say I was fanatical about it. It gave me confidence and peace of mind when I was on the ride knowing everything was good on my bike. Doing it myself made it even better. I still work on my own bikes and enjoy doing it.
